Lu Yehi - Let it be . . .

Six and a half years since it was first formed, the West Ashley Minyan has now become Congregation Dor Tikvah. Revolution, evolution and growth!

The ECForum must evovle as well. My commitment to the Forum's original goals is unchanged, but I have been somewhat less active on the web.

For now, to celebrate the new congregation, here are some links (at the end of the post) to 3 beautiful modern Hebrew songs, songs that resonate like chants or ancient mystical prayers. In no particular order, Shir L'Shalom, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav and Lu Yehi. (Song for peace, Jerusalem of Gold, Let it be, respectively.)

The lyrics to Lu Yehi are reproduced below. You can find out more about these songs on the web, but I will tell you that Lu Yehi was inspired by the Beatles' Let It Be. However, ultimately the songs are very distinct from each other, for one, because the minor and major keys of the verses and the choruses are reversed.

Please note that the renditions linked to here are not necessarily the originals, or the best reproductions of the originals. But the essence is still very accessible.

LU YEHI

Od yesh mifras lavan ba'ofek
mul anan shachor kaved
Kol shenevakesh - Lu Yehi.

Ve'im bacholonot ha'erev
Or nerot hachag ro'ed -
Kol shenevakesh - Lu Yehi.

Lu Yehi, Lu Yehi, Ana, Lu Yehi
Kol shenevakesh - Lu Yehi.

Ma kol anot ani shomei'a
Kol shofar vekol tupim
Kol shenevakesh lu yehi

Lu tishama betoch kol eileh
Gam tefila achat mipi
Kol shenevakesh lu yehi

Lu yehi...

Betoch sh'chuna ktana mutzelet
Bait kat im gag adom
Kol shenevakesh lu yehi

Zeh sof hakayitz, sof haderech
Ten lahem lashuv halom
Kol shenevakesh lu yehi

Lu yehi...

Ve'im pit'om yizrach mei'ofel
Al rosheinu or kochav
Kol shenevakesh lu yehi

Az ten shalva veten gam ko'ach
Lechol eileh shenohav
Kol shenevakesh - lu yehi

Lu yehi.........

ALL WE PRAY FOR

There is still a white sail on the horizon
Opposite a heavy black cloud
All that we ask for - may it be

And if in the evening windows
The light of the holiday candles flickers
All that we seek - may it be

May it be, may it be - Please - may it be
All that we seek - may it be.

What is the sound that I hear
The cry of the shofar and the sound of drums
All that we ask for - may it be

If only there can be heard within all this
One prayer from my lips also
All that we seek - may it be

May it be...

Within a small, shaded neighborhood
Is a small house with a red roof
All that we ask for, may it be

This is the end of summer, the end of the path
Allow them to return safely here
All that we seek, may it be

May it be...

And if suddenly, rising from the darkness
Over our heads, the light of a star shines
All that we ask for, may it be

Then grant tranquility and also grant strength
To all those we love
All that we seek, may it be

May it be...

How to make Hammantaschen!

Never mind Romany Cremes, Lemon Cremes, Biltong and Koeksisters!

Here is a chance to  spy on some South African ex-pats who live deep in the American south.  It is well-know that South Africans abroad pine for all things sweet or savory from Afrika.  But who would have predicted that this would include Hammantaschen.

Then again, it's not unusual for me to be "out for lunch".

Enjoy Purim, and bake your own Hammantaschen

A film worth seeing . . . and then there is Purim

Follow Me: The Yonatan Netanyahu Story
Yoni Netanyahu
Thursday, March 1st, 7:15 pm at the Terrace Theatre

Follow Me: The Yonatan Netanyahu Story produced by Ari Pinchot, son-in-law of Rabbi David and Barbara Radinsky, will be shown as part of the Charleston Film Festival.

The film will consist of two story arcs that will tragically and heroically connect. The first is the dramatic Entebbe hijack and rescue -- 8 days when a nation held its breath and executed a military miracle that redefined the Jewish Nation's call - "Never Again!" The second is the remarkable life story of Jonathan Netanyahu, a young soldier who struggled to find the balance between the people and the Nation he loved. This film is about Jonathan's life, and what led these two dramatic story arcs to intersect on that fateful day.

Purchase your tickets in advance for guaranteed seating!
and I hear that Ari Pinchot will be in Charleston for the screening of the movie.
